Nursery Turned Boho Big Girl
Time is a thief as the saying goes. If that is true, it stole my baby. It has all happened so quickly. Just last week she started screaming whenever we put her to bed in her crib. That was not like her at all. She has been the best sleeper for months. Finally, she had the most epic of meltdowns. Screaming, as if she was frustrated that we were not understanding what she was trying to say. To make her point she proceeded to hurl herself out of the crib, twice. Point taken. I had been seeing the approach of this and I had been on the lookout for a big girl bed.

Originally this was my guest bedroom. This photo is with big sister when she wasn’t so big. This antique bed got moved to her bedroom with the arrival of her baby sister. The art stayed as well as the paint color , wheat bread by behr. I also left the decorative shelf that I faux finished with the help of my nephew.

When designing a nursery it was more about me than the new baby. As she grew and developed her personality I found she was very mature and did not have the same love of intense color as her older sister. She loves cool greens, and soft terra cotta. She adores sequins but not glitter. Soft petal pink and dusty blue are accents in her room.

Pictures of her namesake and other vintage photos of family members adorn her bookshelves, high enough to stay safe but I enjoy looking at them. I think she does too.

Her baby shower was in a deer theme so there are thrifted brass deer and one inherited from her great grandma.

I have a thing for typography so there are words in every room. Little messages for my girls.

Toys and books clean up quickly in these Martha Stewart bins from Home Depot. These are a lovely green and grey which go well with her cactus decor.

She has a floor cushion for play and reading. Paired with a pillow from Home Goods and the serape stripe pillows from Walmart make a good landing pad in case of an accidental tumble from the bed.

Her bedding is opal house from Target and the elephant she couldn’t live without is from their pillow fort line.

The sequined pillows were purchased long before this transformation at bealls outlet. I think they look good in the space and she loves to touch the words. I don’t think kids should have lesser quality products than adults in their rooms just because they are children. My girls have a better nights rest on good cotton sheets than microfiber ones.

Her rug is machine washable and we toss it in regularly. You can find this one and other styles available at Target. The quilt was a thrifting find and is perfect for when mommy has to spend some me time snuggling in the bed. We tucked pool noodles under her sheets to act as bumpers and she far no accidental roll outs. The sheets have some extra give as they are marketed for fitting a twin or a twin xl bed. Anna, the cat, has made it her mission to sleep in Dot’s room as often as possible and she has been found in the crib many times. Even this morning she was outside the closed bedroom door crying to be let in. I think she approves of the space.

A few details not pictured are the placement of the xoxo and love canvases which are behind her bedroom door along with some arrow head hooks from Costplus world market. Also, her bundle of arrows lamp also from world market which is currently tucked behind the wall of curtains in the hand me down closet.

We keep everything she has yet to grow into behind that curtain wall. It’s only as deep as the closet racks and fills the entire back wall of her room. If you look closely you can see her guilted tree branch hooks from world market. Her sound machine sheep hangs there and we play it every night.
My dream bed showed up at a local thrift shop. It has all the turned spindle goodness of a Jenny Lind bed but it has awesome posts on the ends. I had considered painting it but her style is very earthy and subdued compared to her sister. This bed was a fantastic price at $5 and I bought a daybed mattress support at the same store for $15. We already had a twin mattress so a complete bed for $20 was beyond my wildest expectations.

Although we live in Florida her room is more desert blooms. She is very boho with a mix of vintage and new.

We all are enjoying the space and even though it is bittersweet to pack away the crib I enjoy seeing her personality in the space. It is so different from mine and even her sister. I love the diversity in our spaces. This room will continue to grow and change with her and I look forward to all of it.
